Frequently asked questions
Is Detector de Bulos an infallible truth detector?
No, and we do not want it to be. It is a decision aid: it shows you the verdict, the reasoning and the links so you can judge for yourself. AI models get things wrong and go out of date. Use it at home or in class as an excuse to ask "and who exactly is saying this?", not as an oracle handing down sentences.
Do I need to set up an API key or sign up with an AI provider?
No. The AI is included in all three plans: install the extension and it checks straight away, no card and no technical settings. On Pro and Family you can plug in your own API key (BYOK) if you want to: it is an advanced option that gives you unlimited checks and keeps the content off our servers entirely.
What about the privacy of my data and my children’s?
With the included AI, the text you analyze travels encrypted to our server, which asks the AI provider and hands the result back to you. There are no ads, no third-party trackers, and that content is never used to profile you. If you would rather it did not pass through us at all, Pro and Family let you switch on your own key (BYOK) so the analysis goes straight from your browser to the provider you choose.
Can I use it in the classroom?
Yes, and it is one of the uses we care about most. In class it works as media-literacy material: you analyze a headline in front of the group, read the reasoning out loud and discuss whether the sources actually back the claim. The point is not for the AI to hand over the answer — it is for students to learn to ask for evidence first.
How does parental control work?
It is a feature coming very soon to the Family plan, at no extra cost for active licenses. The adult will switch it on from their own profile, locked behind a PIN, so the child will not be able to turn it off. The extension will flag disinformation and hate speech as it appears, and you will get a report of what was stopped: online child safety without reading their conversations or logging their private browsing.
Does this replace professional fact-checkers?
No, and claiming otherwise would be disrespectful to their work. Their standards are exactly the bar we measure ourselves against: when a fact-checking organization has already debunked something, the extension shows you their debunk and links to it. What we add is bringing that rigor to the moment the message reaches you — on your phone or in the classroom — when you do not have twenty minutes to go looking.
